The Tour of Qushui River from the Tale of Genji by Utagawa Toyokuni

Utagawa Toyokuni, also known simply as Toyokuni I, was born in 1769 in Edo (today’s Tokyo) and was most known for his Kabuki actor prints. He studied at the renowned Utagawa School, eventually becoming one of its heads and moving the school to a position of great fame and power during the 19th century. One of his pupils, Utagawa Kunisada, is featured in this exhibit as well. Toyokuni I died in 1869 at the age of 57.
