Details of Kitagawa Utamaro’s life are extremely limited but it is generally agreed upon that he was born around 1753. His other names included Kitagawa Ichitaro and Ichitaro Yusuke. A pupil of Toriyama Sekien, Utamaro specialized in bijin-ga, or prints of beautiful women. His work reached Europe in the mid-19th century where it was very popular, especially in France. He is attributed with influencing European Impressionists through his emphasis on light and shade in his artwork. He produced over 2,000 prints before his death in 1806.
