The Madison For Keeps tent at the Homecoming football game.
JMU staff and volunteers spread the word about Madison For Keeps.
Yes, it rained. Yes, it was chilly. Yes, we cheered until we were hoarse to no avail. But, the Homecoming response to Madison for Keeps, JMU’s emergency student aid initiative, was heartwarming to the extreme!
The weekend started with a generous donation from the JMU Alumni Association Board of Directors. Their 25,000 gift pushed the total for Madison for Keeps over the $100,000 mark. In addition, each member of the alumni board has pledged a personal gift to the effort. It was their way of acknowledging the extraordinary response to Madison for Keeps from JMU’s alumni. And, they hope their example will encourage even more giving! Catch the stories about the gift from WHSV-TV3 and The News Leader.
The Class of ’99 celebrated their 10-year reunion with a tailgate and evening reception at Ham’s restaurant. Class members decided to donate the remaining proceeds from the reception to Madison For Keeps — helping ensure that today’s Dukes may one day enjoy their own 10-year reunions as JMU alums.
And, finally, a number of people supported the cause during the Homecoming football game Saturday afternoon. They stopped by the Madison for Keeps table in the stadium and made their gift to support fellow Dukes. The Madison for Keeps table will be making another appearance at the Nov. 7 home game. See you there!
By the end of Homecoming weekend, we had topped 1,000 donors! Of course, Homecoming is all about tradition, honoring old memories and making new ones. One of JMU’s long-standing traditions is holding open the door so others can enter the building behind you. During Homecoming 2009, our alumni proved true to that tradition in a very special way. Their gifts to Madison for Keeps are holding the door of educational opportunity open for today’s Dukes.
