Map shows the topography and boundaries
of what today are the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia,
West Virginia, and the southern portion of Ohio, the eastern
portion of Kentucky, and the northeastern portion of Tennessee.
Narrow strips of Pennsylvania and North Carolina are at the
top and bottom of the map. The Atlantic Ocean is in the southeast
corner of the map.
The coastal plains are laced with
the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and the Potomac, the
James and other rivers. Moving west or left, the coastal plain
gives way to the hills of the piedmont.
The Potomac is initially blue but
then is the dark line forming the boundary between Maryland
and Virginia. The Potomac reaches into the mountains. To the
west (or left) of the mountains is the Ohio Valley. Again the
rivers of the Ohio Valley are visible as they provide the political
boundaries among Ohio, Kentucky and Western Virginia.
The Wilderness trail crosses the Appalachians
in Southwest Virginia and leads out to the point where Virginia,
Kentucky and Tennessee meet.
