Women Education Leaders in Virginia (WELV) Annual Meeting

Dr. Perritt helped to organize this year's WELV conference, which will include keynote speeches by dynamic and well-respected women in education, including Erika Hayes James and Laura Fornash. These women, coupled with internationally-known Richard and Rebecca DuFour, should make for a wonderful conference. They will also have Noelle Ellerson, Assistant Director, Policy and Advocacy, American Association of School Administrators (AASA), presenting information on what AASA is lobbying for in DC.

Dr. Murphy sat on a panel with JMU’s President Alger and other university presidents at the Education and Life Long Learning session of the Chamber Leadership program held at EMU.  The session focused on the impacts of diversity in educational institutions, and Dr. Murphy shared from her experience in business consulting and education, reflecting on how diversity in school equips students with the soft skills needed for a diverse business environment.

Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (VASCD) Annual Conference

At the VASCD 2012 Conference, entitled, "Taking on Challenges in Teaching, Learning, and Leading", Dr. Perritt will both serve as a panelist and present research.  The panel is on the topic, "How Remarkable Women Lead: What Works". 

"Making Data Driven School Improvement Decisions" (presentation by Dr. Perritt): In September 2011, two elementary schools merged into one new building. During the school year, a comprehensive survey was developed with school division administrators, school faculty and staff to assess first year operations. The survey was administered in June 2011, and data were used to engage school stakeholders in professional development and school decision-making. This presentation will share survey results and how they drove improvement decisions for school year 2011-2012.

A workshop for those interested in board service, organized by the Nonprofit Action Team of the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Healthy Community Council in collaboration with the Non-Profit Institute and JMU Outreach and Engagement.

International Leadership Association (ILA) National Conference

October 24-27, 2012, Denver, CO

At this year's ILA conference, Dr. Murphy facilitated the Leadership Scholarship MIG annual meeting and served as discussant on two other sessions. She also presented as part of a panel discussing the design of the 2012 National Leadership Symposium for student leadership development delivered this past July in Richmond VA. Audience members asked many questions about thinking about design and assessment issues for student leadership development programs. Dr. Murphy is helping to organize next year’s conference, which will be held Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2013  in Montreal Quebec, Canada.

Association for Budgeting and Financial Management (ABFM) Annual Conference

October 11-13, 2012, New York City

After conducting a series of interviews with nonprofit CEOs, EDs, and finance managers in human services to find out how they create, maintain, and utilize operating reserves in their organizations, Dr. Sloan presented her findings at the ABFM annual conference, along with Cleopatra Grizzle of Rutgers University. The paper is titled, Do Governance Decisions Impact Organizational Financial Preparedness?, and was part of a session titled, Nonprofit Financial Management: Challenges, Concerns, and Strategies.

Virginia Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (VATESOL) Annual Conference

This year's conference theme was “Advocacy & Inclusion: Breaking Barriers and Building Community”.  Stephen's session was titled “Immigrant Professional Career Re-entry: Facilitation Methods and Advocacy”.  VATESOL is a state professional association for teachers of English as a second language at primary, secondary and post-secondary levels.

Dr. Perritt gave a presentation entitled, "Using Faculty Survey Data to Make School Improvement Decisions:One School's Journey". Independently, Dara Hall co-presented "The Impact of the Gathering Storm on Student Teachers" with a colleague, Mark Keeler, in which they considered the impact of the Guidelines for Uniform Performance Standards and Evaluation Criteria for Teachers (VDOE, 2011) on pre-service teacher preparation and student teacher experiences.

 Two SSLS students joined JMU's President Alger at SRI International in Menlo Park, CA, as part of his Presidential Listening Tour. Ken Newbold, in his 3rd year at SSLS, serves as JMU's Director for Research and Innovation, and Nick Langridge, JMU's VP for Advancement, is working on his dissertation.
