Undergraduate Minor in Coaching
Mission
The mission of the coaching minor is to respond to the critical need in today's society for quality coaches. The substantial growth in athletic participation, the increased emphasis on sport competition, and the greater attention paid to amateur athletics have motivated legislators, educators and community leaders in many states to mandate that their coaches be educated. This minor provides students with quality systematic coaching education.
Program Description
The Coaching Minor prepares students for the coaching profession on the junior high and high school levels. It is a 21 credit-hour minor that addresses the National Standards for Athletic Coaches, which are required by the National Council for the Accreditation of Coaching Education (NCACE), and the requirements of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The program culminates with a semester long practicum experience that provides the students the opportunity to make application of the knowledge/information that they have gained in their courses. Students who complete the coaching minor will be certified by JMU and the NFHS.
Students interested in the coaching minor should contact program coordinator Dr. Lawrence Ham hamll@jmu.edu. Students who decide to pursue a coaching minor should complete two "Declaration of Minor" forms. One will be provided by Dr. Ham and the other will be found in the Registrar's Office.
