Programs

Alumnae Health and Fitness Program
A weekend in which female alumni return to JMU to participate in assessments of their cardiovascular health, bone health, and physical fitness; work with JMU students to design an exercise prescription to improve health and fitness; and attend lectures and workshops on topics related to nutrition and the importance of physical activity for women's health.

Faculty/Staff Health and Fitness Program
JMU female faculty and staff are invited to participate in fitness testing, attend workshops and lectures about nutrition, physical activity, and health topics specific to women, and get personalized exercise prescriptions. This program is run once a year and provides valuable experience for JMU graduate and undergraduate students, as well as important information for the participants.

Mother Daughter Day
A group of mothers and daughters from the community are invited to JMU’s campus for a series of weekends in February to participate in fitness assessments of their cardiovascular health, bone health, and physical fitness; attend educational workshops and presentations given by JMU graduate students; participate in physical activities; and learn how to incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives.

Movin' and Groovin'
Children from the Harrisonburg/Rockingham community will be invited to attend a one-day workshop on JMU's campus. The children will be involved in educational activities designed to enhance their knowledge of health and fitness. In addition, they will participate in a variety of physical activities to show them how they can incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives.

Pilot Potential Programs

After-School Activities for Girls
Activities focused on adolescent girls in the community who are not interested in participating in the competitive interscholastic athletic programs provided by schools, but are interested in participating in physical activity in a structured setting after school hours. Some individuals may choose to participate in the annual physical challenge, which would be a long distance walk, hike, or backpacking trip.

Summer Physical Activity Camps (Girls and Women)
Activities focused on girls and women who are interested in enhancing their physical activity in a structured setting for one to two weeks during the summer. The camp would be designed to increase the physical activity levels of participants who are not interested in participating in competitive athletic programs. Some individuals may choose to participate in an annual physical challenge.

Training Workshops for Women
A program designed to help women who are not elite athletes, but are interested in constructing physical training programs to enhance their abilities to compete in various events. An additional purpose of any workshop would be to convey the connection between physical activity and health with specific attention to women's health issues.
