Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort
Dear JMU Community;
Helen Keller once wrote, "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." In this spirit, James Madison University has established a coordinated response to the tragic results of hurricane Katrina. This effort is comprised of three main parts:
- Admitting displaced students. JMU is in the process of admitting students on a case-by-case basis from universities closed due to Katrina. If a student is interested in attending JMU for the fall, 2005 semester, they can contact the Director of Admissions at 540-568-6022.
- Participating in the Commonwealth's Combined Virginia Campaign (CVC) Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to give to this fund which will provide 100% of dollars raised to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army. You will receive an e-mail later today with a list of 7 collection points around campus.
- Establishing the Katrina Relief All Together One Team. This coordinating body will be comprised of a representative from each of the 4 university divisions and the Student Government Association. Students, faculty and staff should contact their representative to offer their ideas for assisting in the relief efforts. The Katrina Relief All Together One Team will make recommendations for the university's coordinated efforts with the American Red Cross and Salvation Army for the short-term (e.g. cash donations) and long-term (e.g. non-perishables, clothing, supplies) support of the people in the affected areas. The team will work to bring together campus groups and individuals who want to reach out in similar ways. Anyone on campus with Katrina relief ideas, please contact the representative for your area:
- Academic Affairs: Teresa Gonzalez, 568 3404, gonzalta@jmu.edu
- Student Affairs and University Planning: Zeb Davenport, 568 6468, davenpzr@jmu.edu
- Administration and Finance: Towana Moore, 568 7818, mooreth@jmu.edu
- Advancement: Kim Hutto, 568 2631, huttokm@jmu.edu
- Students: Victor Lim, Student Government Association, 568 6376, limva@jmu.edu
If you are not sure who represents you on the Katrina Relief-All Together One Team, send an e-email with your relief effort idea to the president's office at president@jmu.edu. If you want to volunteer or involve your organization in the university's efforts, you may also send an email to president@jmu.edu.
Through this coordination, it is hoped that we as a community of over 20,000 can reach out as one to all those in the wake of Katrina who need our help.
Linwood H. Rose
President
