Effective immediately the Justice Studies major has dropped the prep major program. All students will go directly into the major. JUST 200 is designated as the first course in the major but it is not a prerequisite for most courses. PLEASE NOTE: The Justice Studies Major cannot be completed in one year due to the sequencing of the major requirements. The key progression requirements are as follows:
Dr. Pham is on leave in the fall semester. We hope to offer a section of JUST 300 in the fall but do not have it confirmed. If we are able to do so we will email you. Enrollment will be by override in the department office. We will offer two sections of JUST 300 in the spring.
This course replaces the SCOM 320/220 requirement for all majors. It will be offered every semester. A very few seats are also available in SCOM 231 and SCOM 331 that will also meet this requirement. Please contact us if you wish to enroll in one of the SCOM sections.
We are offering two sections in the fall. We hope to offer 3-4 sections in the spring. This fall’s sections will be focused on:
Readings and discussion in this class will focus on issues of wealth and poverty as it relates to justice. Examples of topics to be covered include the prison industrial complex; the relationship between poverty and the drug trade; and the relationship between waging war and corporate profit.
This course will examine media constructions of justice. More specifically, what do various media forms have to tell us about justice issues? In the course, we will explore how justice/injustice is portrayed in different media forms, including electronic media and film/television.
The focus of this course is on non-violence. If you are taking the nonviolence course this semester with Professor Beitzel you should not enroll in this course because the overlap will be too great. If you enroll you will be asked to leave the class.
We are offering a number of courses this semester that will fulfill requirements in more than one track:
We have had trouble getting two fall courses onto the preilimarny schedule. Please look for them:
We have a few courses scheduled for JUST and CRJU at JMU in the summer. Please check e campus if you are interested. Students interested in internships should see Dr. Hastedt or Dr. Plass. It will still be possible to sign up for the internship course in May or June.
