Civic Learning as a Sanction

The civic learning program is designed to help students make a connection to campus and their personal mission and goals. Students work in an office on campus and/or meet with a mentor once a week to reflect on their experience at JMU.


Goals of the Civic Learning Program
  1. Students will increase their self knowledge and understand how their personal actions impact and influence the university community.
  2. Students will increase their level of connection/belonging to the university.
  3. Students will increase their level of civic engagement within the university community.
  4. Students will demonstrate an increased motivation to change behavior patterns that could leader to a judicial violation.
Goals for Sites of the Civic Learning Program
  1. Students will develop an understanding of JMU administrative and supportive office structure.
  2. Students will increase their self awareness and understanding of their value and personal role within the JMU community.
Goals for Mentors of the Civic Learning Program
  1. Students will demonstrate increased self awareness, including a sense of purpose and its relation to future goals.
  2. Students will recognize involvement opportunities or services which may facilitate their ability to reach their identified goals.
  3. Students will increase involvement at JMU in order to reach their mission and goals.

**Mentor Training can be completed in one day or over the course of two days. If none of these options work for you, please contact meyergi@gmail.com.

  1. August 8, 8 am – 5:30 pm
  2. September 2, 8 am – 5:30 pm
  3. August 4, 8 am – noon AND August 8, 1 pm – 5:30 pm
  4. September 1, 8 am – noon AND September 2, 1 pm – 5:30 pm

New Site Supervisor Training Dates

**Site Supervisor Training consists of three sessions (Overview, Listening Skills, and Supervisor Training) that can be taken on the same or different days. If none of these options work for you, please contact meyergi@gmail.com.

Overview Session (choose from the following options):
  1. August 4, 8 am – 10:30 am
  2. August 8, 8 am – 10:30 am
  3. September 1, 8 am – 10:30 am
  4. September 2, 8 am – 10:30 am

Listening Skills (choose from the following options):
  1. August 4, 10:30 am - noon
  2. August 8, 10:30 am - noon
  3. September 1, 10:30 am - noon
  4. September 2, 10:30 am – noon

Supervisor Training (choose from the following options):
  1. August 4, 1 pm – 2:30 pm
  2. September 1, 1 pm – 2:30 pm
