JMU Juniors Recognized by Barry M. Goldwater Foundation

HARRISONBURG — James Madison University juniors Jeremy Harris and Rachel Mutnick have been recognized with honorable mention honors from the Barry M. Goldwater Foundation.

Harris and Mutnick were among 157 students to be recognized with honorable mentions out of more than 1,000 students nominated nationwide for Goldwater Scholarships. The Goldwater Scholarship was established in 1986 to support highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. Goldwater Scholars and honorable mentions were selected on the basis of merit from a field of 1,035 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by their colleges and universities. The Goldwater Foundation awarded 321 scholarships.

Harris is majoring in chemistry and physics and plans to pursue a doctorate in solid state chemistry. Mutnick is a biology major and a member of the JMU Honors Program. She plans to pursue graduate studies in infectious diseases and a doctorate in microbiology.
