At JMU, diversity is a lot more than you may imagine.
Here, diversity equals endless possibilities. It means you are accepted for who you are and for your unique talents. It says that your individuality makes this university a richer place.
If you come to school here, you have a fascinating opportunity to change your life. From spending a semester overseas in our popular study-abroad program to becoming a leader in one of our more than 300 clubs and organizations, immersion in the world of JMU means opportunity.
Learning and growing happen everywhere. Part of what makes the Madison Experience so entirely cool.
This is not a cookie-cutter institution. Our graduates are different. They are individuals who know how to learn, assess and adapt. They know how to think for themselves and still be part of a team. Our graduates give of themselves to make the world a better place.
Amazing opportunities will expand your world. If you come here, you are expected to contribute inside the classroom and out. You will have hundreds of chances. Our students tell us that they wish they had more time so that they could participate in all the amazing stuff JMU has to offer.
Our students come from major cities and the tiniest towns. They come from Virginia and 45 other states, and they hail from more than 90 different countries. A typical class might include a girl from just outside Washington, D.C., a guy from a town with one stoplight, and someone else who never saw the United States until he showed up here for school.
Sharing ideas with people who think differently than you do and who are from different places than you are changes the way you look at the world. And you'll have plenty of those opportunities at JMU. Learn more about African-American expression at the Furious Flower Center, deepen your understanding of the wisdom of nonviolence through the Gandhi Center, study with professors who devote themselves to furthering education for all as Professors in Residence, meet dedicated Madison graduates who support today's students through the Black Alumni Chapter, and make friends with fellow students who want to make a difference in the world as Peace Corps volunteers. Most importantly, at JMU you'll develop the relationships that change how you see yourself.
