April 17, 2007

Dear Students,

As I write this, I have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. Our friends, family and colleagues at Virginia Tech have experienced the unthinkable, the loss of members of their community. This tragedy has touched countless numbers of people, both within and outside of Virginia Tech. Our heavy hearts go out to them during this very difficult time.

At JMU, like Virginia Tech, we have had a history of being a very safe environment, and for that we have been grateful. However, the tragedy at Virginia Tech is a reminder that we are like a small city, inherent with city issues and problems. Please be diligent by locking your doors, not walking alone at night, looking out for each other, and increasing your personal and community safety awareness.

James Madison University is a strong and unified community. The friendliness and care shown by faculty, staff and students permeates our daily lives. During this horrifying ordeal, we have seen members of our community supporting each other and reaching out to those at Virginia Tech. I thank you for your spirit of giving to each other and to those in need.

Many emotions will be experienced and expressed as the events continue to unfold. Our Counseling and Student Development Center has additional counselors available for those students who would like support and assistance dealing with the aftermath of this tragic situation. The Center is located in Varner House. Should you need a counselor after 5:00 pm, on-call counselors will also be available for counseling and support. Please contact them at 568-6913.

Tonight, the SGA will hold a light vigil at 9:00 p.m. at the Festival meadow. This will be another opportunity for us to show our support as a community. For additional information and updates, please continue to check the JMU webpage.

Sincerely,
Mark Warner
Senior Vice President for Student Affairs & University Planning
