Can energy be made available to everyone?

The United Nations cites sustainable energy as a key element in the fight to reduce global poverty. This critical need for access to sustainable energy in developing countries was witnessed firsthand by students participating in JMU's Kenya Field School. In Kenya, an ever-increasing demand for electricity hobbles an already fragile economy. Solutions abound; unfortunately many are incredibly expensive. Yet JMU students found a way to introduce affordable and easy access to solar energy in rural homes. Read more.

COB alum Adam Armiger ('07) honors his sister and helps better the lives of those affected by congenital heart defects

Hope for Hearts

When Adam Armiger ('07) was 10 his sister, Hope, passed away, 15 days after her birth, from complex congenital heart defects. CHDs are the world's No.1 birth ailment and the leading cause of all infant deaths in the United States. More than a decade after losing his sister, Armiger, with help from fellow JMU alum Sean Wainwright ('06) founded the Hope Marietta Foundation, raising awareness of congenital heart defects.

Engineering students are characterized by a curiosity to understand the natural and man-made world and use that understanding to solve real-world problems. Follow this year's seniors as they finish their capstone projects and set their sights on their futures.

The Urbino Project

For a group of JMU media arts and communication students, a four-week multimedia reporting undertaking required the students to be print journalists, photographers, videographers and editors all rolled into one, exactly what the modern world of converged media is demanding of journalists. The intensive storytelling experience was set against the backdrop of the Italian Renaissance city of Urbino.
