Members of the James Madison University Student Ambassadors will lead guided tours of the historic buildings on JMU's Quadrangle Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 24) as part of the university's yearlong Centennial celebration.
The free tours will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., beginning at Maury Hall. Maury is one of the two oldest buildings at JMU. Maury and nearby Jackson Hall were both built in 1909.
The student guides will explain the history of the building around the Quad, as well as relating stories from alumni.
Illustrated tour booklets will be available. The booklets contain old and new photographs, along with informational material, on 11 of JMU's oldest buildings and the new Center for the Performing Arts, which will be built across Main Street from the Quadrangle.
The tour begins at Maury Hall and then goes down and around the Quadrangle, ending at Wilson Hall.
Other places featured on the tour include Harrison Hall, Ashby Hall, Spotswood Hall, the site of the Center for the Performing Arts, Sheldon Hall, Alumnae Hall, Wilson Hall and Keezell Hall.
The 20-page tour booklet includes a map of the Quadrangle that highlights the tour. The architect's original plans for the JMU Quadrangle are featured along with a current aerial view of campus.
Tour booklets are available in: the Alumni Office in the Leeolou Alumni Center; the Admissions Office in Sonner Hall; the Parent Relations Office at 220 University Boulevard; and the Centennial Office in Alumnae Hall.
