International Peace Activist Honored

HARRISONBURG - Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, an internationally acclaimed peace activist, will be honored for his dedication to the non-violent transformation of societies.

James Madison University's International Beliefs and Values Institute (IBAVI) will award the 2007 IBAVI Sustainable Visions and Values Award to Dr. Ariyaratne at a guest lecture on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. in Grafton-Stovall Theater. Dr. Ariyaratne's lecture is entitled, "We Can Build a Better World."

Dr. Ariyaratne, a native of Sri Lanka, is the founder of Sarvodaya, a community-based movement that promotes sustainable empowerment of people through self-help and collective support, non-violence and peace. He is the recipient of Gandhi and Niwano Peace Prizes and the Magsaysay and Hubert Humphrey Awards.
