HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison University's undergraduate program in business ranks among the nation's top 50 — No. 35 nationally — in BusinessWeek's first comprehensive ranking of the best undergraduate business schools in the nation that will appear in the magazine's May 8 issue.
The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School is ranked No. 1 in the nation. The University of Virginia's McIntire School is No. 2, followed by schools of business at the University of Notre Dame, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Emory University completing the top five. The Robins School of Business at the private University of Richmond, ranked 25th, is the only other Virginia school in the top 50.
To identify the best undergraduate business programs, BusinessWeek used five measures, including a survey of more than 100,000 business majors at top schools and a poll of undergraduate recruiters. The magazine also looked at starting salaries for graduates and how many each school sent to top MBA programs, and developed an academic-quality score that is a combination of five measures including SAT scores and faculty-student ratios to identify "schools with the smartest, hardest-working and best-served students."
The ranking is based on the "index number," which represents the sum of all five measures.
