HARRISONBURG — James Madison University music Associate Professor David Cottrell has won an Emmy Award for the musical score for a National Geographic Explorer documentary, "Stalking Leopards."
Cottrell and Chris Mangum, his partner in Cottrell-Mangum Music, accepted their first Emmy Sept. 3 in New York City at the 24th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards presented by the National Television Academy.
Cottrell and Mangum's composition was nominated for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft in the music and sound category.
JMU Assistant Professor Michele Kirkdorffer played oboe and English horn in the score.
Cottrell teaches in JMU's music industry program. He joined the faculty in 1996 after teaching 14 years at Shenandoah University in Winchester.
Cottrell-Mangum Music, which focuses on composition and production of music for film and television, is a subsidiary of Team Video International of Washington, D.C.
The Emmy awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast in 2002. Finalists were selected by blue-ribbon panels composed of broadcast industry professionals.
