From: Media Relations September 4, 2000HARRISONBURG Applications are now being accepted for adult participants in James Madison University's Adult Health and Development Program in which JMU students work one-on-one with people 55 and older in a variety of health- and wellness-related activities. The Saturday morning sessions will be held Sept. 23 and 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28, and Nov. 4, 11 and 18. All sessions are held in JMU's Godwin Hall from 9:30 a.m. until noon. "The AHDP is a good way for students and adults 55 and over to connect," said program Director Marilyn Wakefield. "The program gets students out of the classroom, and focuses on building relationships and learning firsthand about the older adult's life experiences." Wakefield said students and older adults team up for exercise, health education and music, as well as discussions in which knowledge and "wisdom about life" are shared. These pairings, she said, improve the health, sense of well-being, physical fitness and health knowledge of the members. For further information or to sign up for the program, call Wakefield at (540) 568-2924. # # #By Charles Culbertson |
