From: Media Relations September 21, 2000HARRISONBURG Cultural diversity takes center stage at James Madison University during the third annual International Week celebration, Sept. 23-Oct. 1. Festivities include cultural performances, a variety of food and music, and thought-provoking guest speakers. The International Extravaganza, slated for Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. in the P.C. Ballroom, Phillips Hall, will feature performances by belly dancer Miramar, Spanish vocalist and pianist Angel Perez, and flutist Cheryl Tobler who will display her international collection of flutes. Tickets for the event, which includes an international buffet, are $10 per person and $5 for JMU students, and may be reserved via e-mail to multicultural@jmu.edu. Veteran actress Alma Martinez will aim to change the way her listeners view film and television through an insightful and humorous journey into the Hollywood image factory Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. in Grafton-Stovall Theatre. Martinez' talk is free to all. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 6 p.m. in Room 402, Taylor Hall, international professors and students will share their perspectives on the United States during a discussion, "America Through Our Eyes." Audience participation is welcomed. A parade, Monday, Sept. 25, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Wilson Hall, will be led by bagpiper John Taylor of Winchester and will include many flags of nations connected to JMU. Other activities include an international community festival at Harrisonburg's Hillandale Park, Saturday, Sept. 23, noon-6 p.m.; a martial arts demonstration; performances by the Hispanic Folklore Ballet, Canadian singer-songwriter Chantel Kreviazuk and Madeline MacNeil playing Celtic music selections on hammered and mountain dulcimers; an African Drum Festival; and a world dance exhibition. JMU student Rida Belkoura, Morocco's table-tennis national champion, will give a demonstration Wednesday, Sept. 27, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., on The Commons.
