SUMMIT ON URBAN SPRAWL SET AT JMU SEPT. 27 | |

From: Media Relations September 20, 2000HARRISONBURG Planning for and controlling growth to benefit the community smart growth will be the focus of a one-day conference Wednesday, Sept. 27, at James Madison University. The "Virginia Summit on Urban Sprawl," to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Grafton-Stovall Theatre and Taylor Hall on the JMU campus, will bring together national and regional experts to discuss land-use issues and urban sprawl. Sessions will include presentations on solutions to sprawl, building "smarter," transportation and land conservation. The scheduled luncheon speaker is Saul Ramirez, deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, who will discuss the "Power of Partnerships," 1-1:30 p.m. The sessions' speakers represent such organizations as the Smart Growth Program, Urban Land Institute, Conservation Fund, National Association of Home Builders, Virginia Coalition of High Growth Communities, Southern Environmental Law Center, Virginia Tech's Transportation Institute, Land Trust Alliance and the Chesapeake Bay Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Session topics include: "Stopping Sprawl by Growing Smarter," "Building Better Places to Live, Work and Play," "Transportation and Growth," "Smart Highways: Innovative Options for Transportation Corridors," "The Future of Conservation: Ensuring Quality Through Standards and Stewardship," "Chesapeake Bay Compact: Tackling Sprawl on a Regional Basis," "Local Initiatives to Maintain Rural Character" and "Building Virginia." Event sponsors include the Virginia Association of Counties, Virginia Municipal League, HUD, RKG Associates, Spectrum Management and the JMU offices of Research and Program Innovation and of Continuing Education.
