HARRISONBURG - The 'gentle' Chinese martial art of Tai Chi, basics of computing and wine appreciation are three of several topics covered in non-credit, college-level courses to be offered in two sessions this fall to older adults through the Lifelong Learning Institute at James Madison University.

An open house to acquaint interested age-55-and-over adults with the institute and its courses is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Activities Center, 305 S. Dogwood Drive, Harrisonburg. Course leaders will be present, and light refreshments will be served.

Session A classes, held from Sept. 11 through Oct. 13, include 'The Art of Self-Renewal for Older Adults,' 'Introduction to Computer Competency,' 'Flowers of Beauty in History,' 'Watercolor Monotype Printing,' 'Wine Appreciation,' 'Stars, Moons and Skies: Basic Astronomy, 'Tai Chi' and 'The Community Around Us,' which will include field trips to Shenandoah Valley points of interest.

Session B, which takes place Oct. 16 through Nov. 17, will include 'Virginia's Presidents,' 'Introduction to the Internet,' 'Thoreau: Rebel With a Cause,' 'The Community Around Us' (which will visit different locales than the Session A course), 'The Old Testament: Events and Stories' and 'Fiber Arts: Then and Now.'

Classes are held one day a week during the two sessions, with most taking place from 9 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. ('Wine Appreciation' will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.).

Some courses include JMU undergraduates who may link up with older adults by e-mail to participate in an intergenerational co-learning experience.

For more information on the institute or to register for classes, call the institute secretary at (540) 568-2923. A description of classes, times, days and costs is available from the institute, or by visiting the LLI Web site.
