HARRISONBURG — The William R. Nelson Institute for Public Affairs at James Madison University will hold an open house Tuesday, May 30, to acquaint the public with the institute‘s staff, accomplishments and goals.

The 4 p.m. gathering will be held in the institute‘s offices at 250 E. Market St. in Harrisonburg (beside the Burger King restaurant).
Nelson, head emeritus of JMU‘s political science department and professor emeritus of political science and law, for whom the institute is named, will be among the JMU faculty and staff in attendance. Joining him will be JMU Chancellor Ronald E. Carrier, Institute Director Stephen R. Bowers, Deputy Director Gerould W. Pangburn, Associate Director Marion T. Doss Jr. and Assistant Director Kevin A. Cloonan.

Bowers will lead an informal presentation about the institute‘s efforts to study Eastern European politics and to help gain recognition for the efforts of Eastern European people in developing democratic societies. The institute‘s mission also includes analyzing political violence and terrorist-related crime and arranging student and faculty exchanges among JMU and the Romanian American University and the Technical University of Moldova.

In February the institute opened an office in Chisinau, Moldova.

For more information, call Dr. Stephen R. Bowers at (540)568-7163.
