HARRISONBURG, Va. – Dr. Linwood H. Rose, president of James Madison University, is one of 14 members of an advisory committee to the James Madison Commemoration Commission, created Tuesday with the signing of legislation by President Bill Clinton.

The 19-member James Madison Commemoration Commission, which is to be chaired by the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, will lead the national celebration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Madison, which occurs March 16, 2001. Leaders of the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate from both major political parties and representatives selected by the president are to serve as members of the commission.

The 14-member advisory committee is to include, in addition to JMU's president, the U.S. archivist, the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, the executive director of Montpelier (ancestral home of Madison in Orange County, Va.), the director of the James Madison Center at JMU, the president of the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation, and eight members who are experts on Madison's legal and historical significance (selected by House and Senate leadership).

A bill to establish the commission and advisory committee was introduced Sept. 28 by U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama. With 39 Senate cosponsors (including Virginia's Sens. John W. Warner and Charles S. Robb), it was passed by the Senate Oct. 25, by the House Dec. 4, and was sent to the president Dec. 8. Clinton signed the legislation Dec. 19.

James Madison University is planning numerous activities to celebrate its eponym in the spring including special events during the week of March 12-16.
