The Rockingham County Board of Supervisors signed a resolution Dec. 13 recognizing James Madison University's Marching Royal Dukes band, which will perform Dec. 31 in Greece at the opening of the four-year celebration of the return of the Olympic Games to Athens in 2004.

The board's resolution noted the "exemplary skills and spirit" displayed by JMU's 350-member marching band and its director, Dr. Pat Rooney, and praised them for bringing "great honor and esteem to the University, the community and this County, by again being invited to perform at a significant world event." The resolution noted the Marching Royal Dukes' 1997 performance in Monaco marking the 700th anniversary of the reign of the Grimaldi family.

Pablo Cuevas, chairman of the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors, presents the resolution to Director of Bands Pat Rooney.

The Marching Royal Dukes, with 150 alumni, parents and friends, will travel to Greece to perform at the Millennium Celebration in Syntagma Square in Athens, as well as at Nauplia, the ancient capital of Greece.
