HARRISONBURG – The James Madison University community will remember one of their own – a man who left his lasting mark on the Harrisonburg campus – with the dedication of the Ernest L. "Junior" Higgs Grove Monday, Oct. 23, at JMU.

As JMU's superintendent of landscaping and design for 26 years before retiring in 1995, the late Higgs was instrumental in planning, maintaining and overseeing the university's picturesque, 472-acre campus. Higgs, who also worked at Endless Caverns 26 years before coming to JMU, died May 19, 1996.

The memorial ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at Higgs Grove, a stand of oak and hickory trees adjacent to the College Center near JMU's University Boulevard entrance.

The ceremony will include the unveiling of a commemorative marker, and remarks by JMU President Linwood H. Rose and Chancellor Ronald E. Carrier, who was president of JMU during Higgs' tenure.

Reserved parking will be provided for guests along Carrier Drive. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Guests are asked to call (540) 568-3979, or e-mail by Oct. 18.
