James Lyon, violin

November 1, 2012 Thursday @ 8 p.m. Recital Hall

James Lyon is currently Professor of Music in Violin at Penn State and on the Schreyer Distinguished Honors Faculty. A member of two faculty-based ensembles at PSU, the Castalia Trio and Duo Concertant, Lyon has played with each of these groups at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and throughout the world, including much of Asia, Europe and the United States. He has given masterclasses at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, the Paris Conservatory, and at the Eastman School of Music, among others. He is a Grand Prize Winner of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and has collaborated in performances with members of the Ying and Tokyo Quartets, as well as members of the Lincoln Center Chamber Players. Lyon serves as concertmaster of both the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and the Music at Penn's Woods Festival Orchestra.

Professor Lyon has been honored by teaching awards from the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State and from the Pennsylvania–Delaware String Teacher's Association. His recordings are available worldwide through CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and Napster and include several works by prominent women composers of the 19th century whose work is just beginning to be recognized for it's true merit. Lyon performs on an 1869 J.B. Vuillaume violin graciously given to Penn State by alum Ray Walker and on a 1983 violin crafted by the award–winning luthier, David Burgess.
