Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Play and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Foreign Play

“Our Country’s Good is a triumph … a tribute to the transforming power of drama … It is heartening to find someone standing up for theatre’s unique spiritual power,“ heralds The Guardian of Wertenbaker’s award-winning work. Based on the true story of convicts rehearsing a play, this drama/comedy is set in June 1789 in a penal colony that will later become Sydney, Australia. A marine lieutenant decides to stage a play for the king’s birthday, casting inmates with little ability to read and no experience acting. The proposal and rehearsals divide the community over questions about the possibility of rehabilitating convicts, the efficacy of art, and the definition of humanity. Presented by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing.
