ETHEL - Music of the Sun
with guest artist Robert Mirabal and a special appearance by JMU’s Madison Singers

Wednesday, January 25 @ 8 p.m., Concert Hall

Acclaimed as America’s premier postclassical string quartet, ETHEL invigorates the contemporary concert repertoire with fierce intensity and exceptional artistry, boldly exploring new synergies between tradition and technology. New York’s ETHEL comprises Juilliard-trained performers Cornelius Dufallo (violin), Ralph Farris (viola), Dorothy Lawson (cello) and Jennifer Choi (violin). The four join forces with Grammy-winning, Native American flutist Robert Mirabal to present a program inspired by the sun mythology of Native America. ETHEL and Mirabal combine the instruments of the string quartet with Native American flutes (Tdoop-Pootse) and drums (Mooloo), and spirited vocals from JMU’s Madison Singers, to create a cross-cultural contemporary music event. The concert also features ETHEL playing original repertoire and the works of composers such as Don Byron, John Luther Adams and others.
