This annual guest-composer concert hosted by the JMU Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band features award-winning composer Donald Grantham from the University of Texas at Austin. The evening presents a premiere performance of his exciting new composition Concerto for Tuba with JMU professor Kevin Stees as the featured soloist. JMU is one of 12 universities to commission this important addition to the repertoire. Additional works include Grantham’s Lone Star Twister, Southern Harmony (winner of both the NBA Revelli Prize and the ABA Ostwald Award) and J’ai été au bal.

The Wind Symphony, under the direction of Stephen Bolstad, is the premier wind and percussion ensemble at James Madison University. They have performed at the College Band Directors National Association and the National Band Association conventions in New Orleans in 1988, Charlotte in 1992, Williamsburg in 1994 and Greensboro in 1999. They have performed at numerous Virginia Music Educators Conferences, and in 1987, at the Kennedy Center. The Wind Symphony has recorded for Kjos, CPP/Belwin, Warner Brothers and C.L. Barnhouse publishing companies.
Ticket prices: $8–$10. Cash, checks, major credit cards, JACards accepted.
JMU student tickets: Advance tickets — $5 discount tickets in person at the Forbes Center Box Office only with ID. One ticket per ID. Student tickets are not available online. Cash only 1½ hours prior to performance.
Mailing Tickets/Will Call — Tickets that are ordered more than two weeks in advance of a performance will be mailed to the address on file. Ticket orders received less than two weeks prior to a performance will be held for pick-up at the Will Call window.
