The Institute for Visual Studies is proud to host Teaching Kenya: A Documentary by Alex Sirney.
Alex, a recent JMU graduate with both an anthropology and and SMAD background, spent the summer of 2006 in Kenya. Working from over 30 hours of footage, he has compiled a significant and comprehensive commentary about the education system from a Kenyan point of view.
Focusing on both teaching methodologies and the broader cultural context surrounding the education system, the film is at once critically informative and hopeful. It works to open a dialogue that will generate solutions to the difficulties Kenya has suffered as a result of economic setbacks.
Alex will be giving a brief lecture prior to the screening and then will lead a discussion to follow.
