The Environmental Transportation Lab

Dr. Christie-Joy Brodrick

The Environmental Transportation Laboratory conducts applied research, education, and outreach on topics related to the movement of people and goods. Our research focal points include characterizing driver choices, evaluating advanced vehicle technologies, and quantifying the environmental and energy impacts of transportation technologies and policies. Undergraduate participation in applied research is a fundamental component of the program, and students work closely with the City of Harrisonburg, Shenandoah National Park, and graduate students at the University of California, Davis. Surveys, simulation modeling, and statistical analysis are amongst the tools we employ. We are also actively involved in outreach efforts to K-12 students, Harrisonburg Transit customers, and Shenandoah National Park visitors. The laboratory is supported by grants from the Department of Energy, Freightliner LLC, and the City of Harrisonburg. We are closely affiliated with the JMU Fuels Diversification and the JMU Affiliates Programs.
