10/27/2011 - Call for Applications for Summer Semester in Scotland Program Director

University Studies and the Office of International Programs seek a Director for the Summer Semester in Scotland program. This new program will offer General Education courses only and will begin Summer 2013. The Director will be on-site for at least the first two summers of the program and will fulfill the roles of both Faculty Member in Residence (FMIR) and Director during that time.  This is a six-year position, to be reviewed annually, with possible extension up to two years.   The Director oversees the Summer Semester in Scotland program and is responsible for the following:

  • Commitment to General Education

  • Student advising and recruitment on campus and admission to the program

  • Pre-departure and on-site orientation

  • Recruitment of JMU faculty to teach in program

  • Recruitment for the Faculty Member in Residence (FMIR)

  • Training and advising the FMIR

  • Summer semester calendar, course offerings, course and faculty evaluations

  • Financial management of the budget

  • Student and faculty emergencies

  • Constructive relationships with on-site faculty, staff, hosts, and vendors, etc.

  • Clear, consistent, and open communication with the Office of International Programs and General Education regarding program operations

Semester Program Directors are compensated with a salary paid over the course of a calendar year.

Interested faculty should send a cover letter, curriculum vita, and two references to the Office of International Programs, MSC 5731. Preference will be given to faculty members who have served previously as an FMIR or have equivalent experiences abroad. Applications are due Monday, December 5. The selection process will be completed early in the Spring 2012 semester. The successful candidate will work with the Summer Semester in Scotland Steering Committee to develop the program.
