06/23/2008 - Call for Proposals for Short-term Study Abroad Programs in Summer 2009
The Office of International Programs (oIP) is committed to fostering faculty development opportunities with a global emphasis. Consequently, the oIP encourages all full-time faculty to take advantage of an exciting faculty development opportunity: teaching a short-term course abroad. The oIP will also provide help to faculty interested in developing group programs with an international dimension.
The oIP is responsible for administering all credit-bearing programs involving student travel and removes much of the burden associated with development and coordination by following an established timeline. The oIP staff supports faculty in planning programs, including assistance with student recruitment, lodging and transportation, excursions, and budget development.
A preliminary meeting with OIP staff is required and should be scheduled during the summer to facilitate the proposal development process (deadline for proposals is September 1).
Generally, courses run from three to seven weeks over the summer and offer six to nine credit hours. Course approval must be routed through regular unit and college channels. Recently JMU has provided summer study abroad opportunities in Argentina, Canada, China, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Scotland, South Africa, and the U.K. Completed short-term course proposals should be submitted to the oIP no later than September 1 in order to be included in the Summer 2009 schedule of programs. Events such as the upcoming Annual Study Abroad Fair in late September and fall semester program information sessions provide faculty with the opportunity to promote their courses to a significant number of students.
