01/29/2008 - Call for Applications for Semester Abroad Faculty Member in Residence

The Office of International Programs (OIP) invites applications for the positions of Faculty Member in Residence (FMIR) in Antwerp, Florence, London, and Salamanca.  Semester and Summer Study Abroad Programs are open to all JMU full-time faculty and to administrators with teaching designations. Complete applications are due by March 14, 2008 for the following semesters:

  • Antwerp: Fall 2009
  • Florence: Spring 2009, Summer 2009, and Fall 2009
  • London: Fall 2009
  • Salamanca: Spring 2009 and Fall 2009

JMU's Semester Abroad Programs offer JMU faculty an exciting opportunity to work in an international environment, collaborate with faculty of different nationalities and educational training, live in the host country with their families, and experience everyday life in a new culture.  The FMIR’s primary responsibilities are to lead and manage the students’ academic and cultural program and to manage the program’s finances.  The FMIR also either teaches one course, conducts an approved research project, or engages in an approved service project.

Prior to submitting the application, candidates must consult with the program director who has responsibility for the curriculum and program management.  The program director will review preliminary course and project proposals for appropriate fit with the overall curricular offerings and insure that they take full advantage of the unique learning opportunities offered by the host country. Once the program director approves the course or project, the faculty member should obtain approval from both the director and their department for the course or project they propose to conduct abroad, as well as for release from teaching on campus during the term(s) listed.

Completed applications received by the deadline are reviewed by the FMIR Selection Committee.  Selections will be confirmed by the close of this academic year.

"Living abroad for an extended period of time will put a new perspective on a lot of things in your life. My entire family views our semester in London as a life- altering experience. JMU's semester abroad programs are excellent, well planned and conducted with integrity and respect."

Michael Goldberger, Department of Kinesiology, former London FMIR
