Arriving or departing by plane:

The following is a list of the nearest airports to JMU's campus:

  Distance from campus: About 30 minutes. This airport provides a shuttle service to and from its airport. You can register and pay  online at the airport's website. [This is our  recommended airport.] 

  Distance from campus: About 1 hour

  Distance from campus: About 2 hours. [Make sure NOT to confuse this airport with Dallas Airport in Texas].


University Transportation Webpage

Make sure to refer yourself to the university's transportation webpage to obtain an extensive a detailled list of on and off-campus transportation options

=> One of the most convenient and cheapest ways to travel to Union Station (DC train Station) or the IAD airport and back during the breaks is to use the Valley Connector. To reserve your seat call this number (540) 624-3011 at least 48 hours in advance. Read this flyer for more information.


Obtaining a Driver's License:

To obtain a driver's license, you will need to bring the following documents with you to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV); the office located about 8 minutes away from downtown Harrisonburg:

  • An official JMU transcript as a proof of VA residency
  • Your passport with your stapled I-94 form as your primary proof of identification
  • Your I-20 or DS-2019 as a secondary proof of identification

You will then need to complete the following steps:

  • A computer Knowledge Test
  • A machine Vision Screening Test
  • A Road Skills Test - For this test you will need to provide your own vehicle with a valid inspection sticker, license plates, registration card, working brakes, safety belts, horn, lights, turn signals, mirrors and speedometer.
