Arriving or departing by plane:

The following is a list of the nearest airports to JMU's campus:

  Distance from campus: About 30 minutes. This airport provides a shuttle service to and from its airport. You can register and pay  online at the airport's website. [This is our  recommended airport.] 

  Distance from campus: About 1 hour

  Distance from campus: About 2 hours. [Make sure NOT to confuse this airport with Dallas Airport in Texas].

- One of the most convenient and cheapest ways to travel to Union Station (DC train Station) or the IAD airport and back during the breaks is to use the Valley Connector. To reserve your seat call this number (540) 624-3011 at least 48 hours in advance. Read this flyer for more information.

 

Obtaining a Driver's License:

To obtain a driver's license, you will need to bring the following documents with you to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV):

  • Proof of VA residency:
    • If you live on-campus, you need an official JMU transcript. To do so order the the transcript to be 'hold for pick-up' When entering your address, put the full JMU main address with your mailbox number.
    • If you live off-campus, your rental agreement, or a recent bank statement
  • Primary proof of identification: your passport with your printed I-94 form as your 
  • Secondary proof of identification: your I-20 or DS-2019

You will then need to complete the following steps:

  • A computer Knowledge Test
  • A machine Vision Screening Test
  • A Road Skills Test - For this test you will need to provide your own vehicle with a valid inspection sticker, license plates, registration card, working brakes, safety belts, horn, lights, turn signals, mirrors and speedometer.
