Welcome to James Madison University!
Thank you for choosing JMU! Now that you are here, the real work begins. Mark Twain, a nineteenth century American writer, once wrote,
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness…. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”
You will come to understand this sentiment in a very real way over the coming semester. In making the decision to come to JMU, you chose to leave your corner of the world and travel to a foreign place where you likely knew few people. We commend you for your courage and the strength you have already shown in following through on this decision.
During the course of your education here, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, anxious and alone. Hopefully, those feelings will be balanced by feelings of excitement, growth, and happiness. We at ISSS wish to be a place on campus where you will feel at home, no matter your frame of mind or your feelings at the time. We are serious about our desire to be welcoming to you, regardless of the faith, background, race, sexual orientation, and abilities you encompass.
