U.S. Department of State
The U.S. Department of State is the government agency responsible
for foreign affairs. This Department includes all U.S. Consulates
and Embassies responsible for the issuance of visas into the United
States. In addition, the Department of State includes the J-1 exchange
visitor program.

Department of Homeland Security
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is responsible to "prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's
vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage from potential
attacks and natural disasters." DHS is the governmental department
which oversees USCIS, ICE, and several other branches.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) is responsible
for the administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication
functions and establishing immigration services policies and priorities.
USCIS makes and enforces regulations concerning all non-immigrant
visa types, approves employment authorization documents and processes
other immigration petitions.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the investigative
branch of the Department of Homeland Security responsible for the
enforcement of U.S. Immigration Laws. As such, ICE is the agency
which oversees the SEVIS system and the Special Registration (NSEERS)
Program.

Internal Revenue Service
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is the government agency which
regulates and collects all U.S. income taxes. You will be responsible
for filing a written report with the IRS every year while you are
present in the United States.

Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration is the agency which is responsible
for the collection and distribution of the Social Security Tax,
a benefit to retirees and persons unable to work due to injury or
illness. The Social Security Administration also distributes Social
Security Numbers (SSN) to anyone employed in the United States.
