Social Security Number
The social security number is a personal identification number
issued by the U.S. government for tax purposes. Many stores and government offices request your
social security number prior to cashing a check or granting other
benefits to you. In addition, all JMU employees must
have a valid U.S. social security number prior to
the issuance of their first paycheck. Therefore, if you have acquired
or are intending to obtain a job at JMU, you are urged to apply
for a social security number as soon as possible upon your arrival
to campus. The office of International Students and Scholar Services coordinates rides to the social security office during
the first few weeks of classes. You may also visit the office on
your own - just make sure you take all required paperwork with you.
The local Social Security office is located at 227 E. Elizabeth
Street in Harrisonburg. You will be required to take the following:
- Passport;
- Visa;
- I-94 showing current status;
- A letter from International Student and Scholar Services verifying
that you are authorized to work at JMU pursuant to the terms of
your visa and/or exchange agreement;
- If you are an F-1 student, you will also need a letter from the office which has hired you, or from the Student Employment Office which verifies that you currently have a job offer on campus.
