Student Employment Rules

Certain immigration rules apply to both on-campus and off-campus student employment, depending upon the type of visa the student holds. Unless it is expressly permitted under the visa category you hold, you will violate your legal status in the U.S. if you accept employment. Regardless of what you may have heard about working in the U.S., do not come to school intending to earn a lot of money while you are a student. The U.S. government is becoming more and more serious about enforcing the rules against unauthorized employment, and it simply is not worth taking the risk to work illegally. Take the time to read and understand the rules pertaining to the visa category you hold, and ask the Office of International Student and Scholar Services if you have any questions.
