Other Nonimmigrant Visa Dependent requirements
Dependents of certain other non-immigrant visa holders (i.e., A,
G, H, L, O, P, and R) are eligible to study in the U.S. as long
as their spouse or parent maintains valid visa status. The following
regulations apply to you if you are eligible for study as the dependent
of a non-immigrant visa holder:
- Your status is tied to that of your parent or spouse. If/when
the primary visa holder leaves the country, you must also leave
the country or apply for a change of appropriate student status;
- For all visa categories except A and G, a dependent child loses
his/her dependent status upon turning 21 years old. Therefore,
you must change your status to an appropriate visa category prior
to your 21st birthday if you wish to remain in the United States;
- Dependent children in A and G status lose their dependent eligibility
upon reaching 23 or 25 years old, provided they have been a student
up to that point. If you are an A or G dependent child, you must
change your status to an appropriate visa category prior to your
23rd birthday if you wish to remain in the United States (or prior
to your 25th birthday if your country has a bilateral agreement
with the United States that allows you to remain a dependent until
your 25th birthday);
- If you are the dependent of a non-immigrant visa holder, and
if the primary visa holder is leaving the U.S. before your education
is complete, or you will be turning 21 years old (23 or 25 if
in A or G status), it is your responsibility to inform International
Student and Scholar Services as early as possible so steps can
be taken to change your visa category.
