Sessions
Every year we rely on volunteers to provide informative sessions on topics pertinent to the ISLC participants. We would love to have many presenters from different schools.
Sessions are encoured in areas such as cross-cultural communication, conflict resolution techniques, leadership styles, diversity training, employment resources for international students, information about historical leaders, or other areas of interest to international students. Please complete the online Session Proposal Form. In order to assist you in thinking about the types of programs you might offer, we encourage you to consider the following broad categories: Wellness, Skills and Knowledge Improvement, Identity, Communication.
2012 Workshops
SESSION I: 1:45 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.
Got conflict? Communicate! |
In this session we will explore the relationship between healthy conflict communication and successful leadership. There will be time to reflect on your personal conflict style and practice strategies for engaging difficult conversations. |
BARNGA and the Game of Five Tricks |
BARNGA is a game that was designed in Liberia in 1980 and played by thousands of people around the world since that time. It is a card game played in silence that will test your ability to communicate and navigate inter-culturally while having fun at the same time. If you want to learn about inter-cultural communication for personal reasons, or if you have been seeking activities to use with student groups or other organizations you lead, this is the game for you. Limited to 32 people. |
The Employment Visa Minefield: Life After F-1 |
If you are graduating soon and want to know how you may be able to stay in the U.S. to work, this is the session for you! Come ready to ask any questions you ever had about "H-1B's" and other work visas and green cards. |
Open Space: A New Way of Meeting |
Open Space challenges you to open your mind to a new way of meeting. Open Space is a fun and interactive method that encourages all participants to have an equal voice in a group and empowers each person to be a leader. |
Vital Signs Of How To Lead |
This presentation will increase the initiation power of a leader’s ability to lead a change through relationship building, the art of communication, and problem solving. Proactively addressing life's obstacles and more, paves the way for a constructional change, one's wellbeing, and a better community. Come, experience, learn, and lead the change. |
Explore, Experience and Engage as Global Leaders |
The purpose of this session is to further facilitate leadership opportunities. The speakers will share their experiences in order to inspire and provide tips for success to become a leader. This interactive session will also provide group discussion opportunities on how to initiate, lead, engage, and promote a global citizen society on campus as a community leader. |
How Ordinary Groups Become Extraordinary Groups |
Everyone wants to be part of a group that achieves amazing results. As the leader of a group, others look to you to make it happen. Come participate in this "hands-on" experience to learn the Six Group Needs and the Four Feelings of Transformation. You will leave with key steps you can use to turn your ordinary group into an extraordinary group. |
SESSION II: 3:30 P.M. - 5:15 P.M.
Leading the change within! |
How do different student organization leaders lead the change especially when confronted with disagreements and issues within their organizations. Use this opportunity to express your own personal problems or any issues within your organization to brainstorm with the panelists some ways to resolve them! |
Roundtable Discussion for Advisors |
A special session for advisors to openly discuss issues such as: sharing your best pratices and your failed attempts. How do you include non-visa holders in your programs and events? and how do you assess your programs as well as trends and concerns on your campus? |
Team Building Exercises for the Campus Community |
Are you a leader constantly on the look-out for fun activities that can energize your group while building team spirit and cohesion? Participants in this session will experience 4 – 6 different team building exercises that can be taken back to home campuses and modified to benefit a wide variety of groups around the campus community. |
Giving voice to the voiceless: theater techniques as a powerful tool of social change |
The power of theater lies in its ability to build communities and connect people. True stories told honestly and artfully offer healing and hope to the tellers and the hearers. This workshop will identify techniques that have worked successfully with traumatized communities and methods that have revealed and performed personal experiences to educate and mobilize community members to take action. |

Healthy Assertiveness in Everyday Life |
This workshop will teach you the essential skills and importance of presenting your needs in everyday interpersonal relationships. It teaches audience the harmonic ways to express yourself. If you have difficulties saying "No", this workshop is for you. |
Difficult Conversations: Managing Conflict and Misunderstanding in Relationships |
This interactive and group based workshop will educate students on the various dynamics involved in effective relational communication. Students will have the opportunity to process, conceptualize, and problem solve challenging interactions which they have encountered. Issues related to cultural diversity will be given special consideration. |
