SAGE: Study Abroad General Education Grant

In summer 2005, The General Education Program and the Office of International Programs (oIP) initiated an exciting curriculum development project, the Study Abroad General Education (SAGE) Grant Program. The SAGE Program is intended to expand general education offerings in international settings by providing support to faculty in the development or reworking of existing general education courses for offering as short-term study abroad programs during the summer. Two grants for stipends of $1,500 are awarded during the spring semester to be used during the summer of the next year for development of a study abroad course. If travel funds are required for the completion of the project, these may be requested through existing oIP procedures. Grant recipients agree to work with the oIP for appropriate training and for the recruitment of students.
Here are some possible examples, but please feel free to think of others:
- Art History courses (GARTH 205/206) taught in London, Paris, or Madrid, drawing upon the art and architecture of a major European capital,
- Great Works (GHUM 200) sections in which students visit the region where a particular literature flourished,
- Science courses (GSCI) or Global Experience courses (Cluster Four) utilizing the resources of another country.
The Proposal Process
Faculty must submit a completed proposal to the oIP by April 21, 2008 . Proposals will be reviewed by both the appropriate General Education Cluster Committee and by the oIP. A completed proposal will include:
- title of course
- description of the course
- location(s) of the course
- syllabus
- and a statement about the benefits of teaching the course in the proposed location.
