Participation in a JMU Semester-Long Program
JMU provides unique and intensive international experiences for
students through our semester-long programs in Antwerp, Florence,
London, and Salamanca. Faculty and professional staff may participate
in semester-long programs (with the exception of Florence, which
has an on-site Director) as a Faculty Member in Residence (FMIR)
accompanying students and either teaching a course or engaging in
a small research or service project while abroad. Moreover, the
overarching role of Director for the Semester in Antwerp, Semester
in London, and Semester in Salamanca Programs periodically changes
hands, typically on a four or five year cycle. Semester program
Directors serve as administrators for the semester-long programs,
with responsibility for program curriculum, finances, and student
experience. The roles of FMIR and Director are wonderful professional
development opportunities which add international dimensions to
the JMU curriculum and facilitate students' academic and personal
growth.
"Living abroad for an extended period of time will put a new perspective on a lot of things in your life. My entire family views our semester in London as a life- altering experience. JMU's semester abroad programs are excellent, well planned and conducted with integrity and respect."
Michael Goldberger, Department of Kinesiology, former London FMIR
