Genocide and Refugee Advocacy in Phoenix, AZ (Spring Break)

Program Description

This program will offer students a unique opportunity to work directly with refugees from around the world from countries such as Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Burma, Bhutan, Cuba and many others. Students will be able to talk with, learn from and socialize with refugees being resettled in the United States. Additionally, students will be able to work with an ongoing relationship between JMU and The Lost Boys Center for Leadership Development, an advocacy organization started by The Lost Boys of Sudan. This unique opportunity will afford students the opportunity to be a part of an advocacy organization that is working to build the newest nation in the world. In class sessions will be seminar style. You will learn about genocide in the world happening now and those that have occurred in history, refugee issues and becoming an advocate for social change. We will engage in discussions, view films and work on advocacy projects. This class style will empower you to learn and think on levels deeper than previously imagined. You will learn a great deal and have an amazing experience working with people from all over the world!

Location Description

Students will travel to warm and sunny Phoenix, AZ! Phoenix offers a great destination to learn about refugee populations and their resettlement in the United States. A diverse and vibrant Southwestern city with a thriving service economy, Phoenix is an ideal destination for refugees entering the United States. Students will enjoy warm weather, great food, a new environment, beautiful views and great hiking. A trip to Sedona will allow students to visit Red Rock National Park and explore beautiful vistas in a unique American vacation destination.

Accommodations

Students will stay in an amazing hostel in Phoenix, AZ close to the vibrant downtown shops and restaurants. A hiking and dining trip to Sedona, AZ is a great way to spend a reflective free day. Two meals per day will be provided in the program cost.

Additional Items to Consider

Ideal candidates will have an interest in social justice, social change, international issues, and service-learning.

This program is targeted to sophomores through seniors.

Application Process

For this program, students are required to submit the following material(s):

  • JMU Short-Term Application Form

  • A supplemental essay addressing the following question:
    "Why are you applying and what do you hope to get out of the program?"

Applicants must have a GPA minimum of 2.0.
