JMU Internship in Spain

Program Description

The Internship in Spain program is designed for students who are interested in learning and experiencing the Spanish working environment. Students will have the opportunity to take a course in Spanish Business and/or intern in several industries such as Business, Education, Communication, Legal, Engineering and Non-Profit. The internships will take place in Valencia, Spain and hosted by Globalinks Learning Abroad, a JMU partner to provide the internship placement.

Students have the option to earn either 3 or 6 credits through the program. For those interested in 6 credits, students will start the first two weeks with JMU Salamanca program studying Business Spanish (Span 330, 3 credits) Upon completion of Span 330, students will transfer to Valencia for a 4-week experience, 5 days a week for approximately 40 hours a week. At the end of the program, students will either earn International Business Internship (IBUS 494, 3 credits) or Spanish Internship and Field Experience (Spanish 490, 3 credits). The pre-requisite for Business Spanish is Span 300.

For the 3 credits option, students will be placed in an internship site in Valencia, 5 days a week for approximately 40 hours a week for a total of 6 weeks.  At the end of the program, students will either earn International Business Internship (IBUS 494, 3 credits) or Spanish Internship and Field Experience (Spanish 490, 3 credits).

Location Description

Salamanca is located in northwestern Spain, about two hours from Madrid, retains its enchanting medieval character. As the oldest university in Spain and third in Europe, the University of Salamanca was founded in 1218. As a “University City,” Salamanca is well known for hosting students from all over the world in teaching Spanish language and culture. As a result, the city is very student friendly and provides a welcoming environment for young people to learn, live and experience the Spanish lifestyle. 

Valencia is the located on the Mediterranean Sea and as the third largest city in Spain, it is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe with strong influences in science, education, business and the arts. The city center is made up of historic buildings, cathedrals, shops and restaurants. With approximately 800,000 “Valencianos,” the city provides a metropolitan environment with easy access to the rest of the Spain.

Accommodations

In Salamanca, students will stay with host families with all meals covered while in Valencia, students have the option to choose either an apartment with no meals or host family with some meals provided.

Additional Items to Consider

Span 300 (Spanish Grammar and Communication) is required as a pre-requisite for Span 330 (Business Spanish). The experience also satisfies the International Business study abroad requirement. Fluency in Spanish is not required but preferred.
