American University of Sharjah
LocationSharjah, United Arab Emirates
AUS is in the United Arab Emirates in the emirate of Sharjah, about 40 minutes from Dubai. Sharjah is a modern city of learning and the arts, as confirmed by its 1998 UNESCO designation as the Cultural Capital of the Arab World. This context facilitates the university's intention to be an academic center at the intersection of ancient cultural traditions and contemporary intellectual currents.
The city of Sharjah is home to more than 20 museums with splendid collections of artifacts and art as well as exhibits on science and natural history. Strategically situated between the Far East and the West, Sharjah is a global trade center. The third largest of the seven states that form the United Arab Emirates, Sharjah has beautiful beaches on the shores of the Arabian Gulf in the West, and the Gulf of Oman and Indian Ocean in the East. Sharjah's climate is idyllic from November to April with daytime temperatures ranging from 18 to 30 degrees C, cool evenings and low humidity. From May to September the climate is hot; in July and August temperatures can reach in excess of 45 degrees C.
American University of Sharjah (AUS) was founded in 1997 as an independent, not-for-profit, English-medium coeducational institution. Although consciously based on upon American institutions of higher education, AUS is also expected to be thoroughly grounded in Arab culture and to be part of a larger process of the revitalization of intellectual life in the Middle East. In its early years, AUS benefited from associations with the American University in Beirut, Texas A&M University, and American University in Washington, D.C. In addition, the great majority of AUS faculty members earned their terminal degrees from institutions in North America. AUS is emerging as a leading comprehensive university in the Gulf, serving students from the region and around the world. Approximately 3,500 students from 18 nations are enrolled at AUS. The AUS campus is located in an Academic Village approximately five miles from Sharjah city.
American University of Sharjah is licensed in the United States by the Department of Education of the State of Delaware, accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and licensed by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. All undergraduate and graduate programs are recognized by the ministry and have been awarded either accreditation or accreditation-eligible status. All six of the bachelor degree programs in the AUS School of Engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the United States. AUS offers 21 bachelor's degrees, 35 minors, eight master's degrees and five graduate certificate programs.
