Intensive Arabic in Yemen

progphoto_abroad_yemen

Summer 2010 : May 17 to June18 (tentative dates)

Program Location

progphoto_abroad_yemen_mapSituated in a mountain valley at an altitude of more than 7,200 feet, Sanaa has been inhabited for more than 2,500 years  In the 7th and 8th centuries the city became a major centre for the propagation of Islam. This religious and political heritage can be seen in the 103 mosques, 14 hammams and over 6,000 houses, all built before the 11th century. Sana’a’s many-storeyed tower-houses built of rammed earth (pisé) add to the beauty of the site.  Sanaa’s altitude makes it cool (approximately 75 degrees with low humidity) in the summer, making it an ideal site for language study.

Students will complete one entire year (six credits) of modern standard Arabic during an intensive 4 week, 5 classroom hours a day course.  In addition, there will be biweekly evening lectures on Yemeni history, political science, and literature, a walking progphoto_abroad_mosquetour of old Yemen’s architectural history, and demonstrations of Arabic music, calligraphy, and dance.  There will be two overnight field trips to the beautiful mountain regions of Harraz and the coastal plain of the Tihama.
