International Communication Summer Tour:
Exploring Best Professional Practices

Program Location
Founded in A.D. 42, London is a modern hub of culture, politics, and business, especially global public relations and media. Dubai, a safe and secure tourist mecca, has emerged in only a few decades as one of the world’s most dynamic business and media centers. With five millennia of glorious and rich cultural history, Cairo has become a center of amazement for travelers from around the world. Lonely Planet describes the indomitable city as “Where the ancient and modern mix furiously.” It is also the home of one of the region’s oldest and finest academic institutions, American University in Cairo. Brussels is not only home to the European Commission and the council of minister of the European Union (EU), it is a cosmopolitan city serving as a business and tourist crossroads for all of Europe.
Academic Program
Students will explore cutting-edge global issues with communication professionals at organizations ranging from corporations and public relations agencies to non-profit and NGO groups, as well as local, U.S., and international government agencies. Professional and academic seminars and field studies in each country will provide invaluable opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge, insights, and socially significant issues. Extracurricular experiences will offer both cultural enhancement and adventure. Likely choices include theatres and museums of London, visiting the pyramids and the world-class Egyptian Museum, sailing the Nile, a dune-bashing safari, camel rides, snow skiing in the desert, and weekend trips to Paris and Prague.
Instructional methods include lectures, guided tours, field work, journal assignments and/or papers.
Tentative course offerings:
SCOM 395 Study Abroad Seminar, 6 credits
Accommodations
Students will reside in hotels and residence halls/dormitories in London, England; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Cairo, Egypt; Brussels, Belgium. Group meals will be provided.

In addition to the Short-term Application, interested students should submit a faculty recommendation. A personal interview will also be required. SCOM 261 is strongly recommended.
