Short-term Programs

Location Description

This is a four-week program based in Reggio Calabria, at the Università per Stranieri Dante Alighieri. The program gives students the opportunity to earn JMU credits while living in Calabria, the region whose name means “land that produces beautiful things”.

Reggio Calabria is a beautiful location on the water in the famous Stretto di Messina which separates Italy from Sicily.  The seafront  that faces Sicily, defined as “the most beautiful kilometer in Italy”, has a breathtaking view of the volcano Etna.  The people of Reggio Calabria are very hospitable and kind towards visitors and foreigners.  The University is based in the downtown area of Reggio Calabria,  a three-minute walking distance from the Sicily- facing seafront, defined as "the most beautiful kilometer in Italy" by the famous poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, with a breathtaking view of the volcano Etna.

Additional Information

Students will buy cell phones on location; there is a trip every weekend, one of which will be 2-days long; students live in apartments; each apartment can host 4 or 6 JMU students.

Accommodations

Students will stay in apartments for the duration of the program. All lunches and 2 special dinners are included in the program fee.

In addition to the oIP application form, students are required to submit the following material:

  • A supplemental essay addressing the following question(s):
    "Why do you want to Study Abroad?"
  • A completed Faculty recommendation form which can also be found by following the link to Applications and Forms

**Completion of ITAL 101 (or permission from director) is a necessary prerequisite for the program.

The program is suitable for majors/minors in Italian, IBUS majors with Italian concentration and Business Italian minors.
